John Steinbeck

  1. In your video, you made a comment about how your story showed the "true character of people." I really liked that comment, and our stories were very similar in that aspect. The poem I chose was written in the same time period as yours, and they shared the aspect of displaying true character. Many people associate imagery with poems, but I found it very insightful that your associated it with a short story.

  2. I liked your video and the creativity that was with it. One thing that was in relation to mine would be that the author talked about his past experiences. Mine talked about a girl remembering being called a name and that is the only thing she remembers. The thing that stuck out to me was the fact that Steinbeck used imagery to make us think of the conditions even though Modernists did not favor Nature.

  3. The video itself was very well put together! When you said he strayed away from society it really showed a Modernism quality that many people forget, so good job on hitting that point. Also when you talk about decay of the peoples thoughts and hopes was very good Modernism example. Good job!

  4. I read "When the Negro was in Vogue" and similar to "Breakfast", the short story contained lots of imagery. Like Danny said, imagery is very important when describing setting. In my story, Harlem is greatly described, and Danny's outdoor setting is also explained. My story didn't discuss individualism as much as Danny's did, however. It covered more of the tension between two sides.
"Breakfast" sounds like an interesting read because I love a story the has a lot of detail, or imagery.

  5. Your story from the sounds of it is kind of like mine. My poem was a description of two pears and it sounds like your poem was a description of a group of men sitting around a fire making breakfast while in the wilderness. It sounds like your story was kind of random like mine which I related to Modernism. Your poem also talks about these men working hard all day in fields which would give me the illusion that they are slaves and are going through hardships which was around the time of the Modernism period and is evident in many writings of the Modernism style

  6. The true character of people is also represented in my story. The character is in love with a girl, but she is never able to stay with him. My story also had a lot of imagery.

  7. Like your short story, The tropics in New York focused on individual feelings too. This short story also has good imagery, like my poem.

  8. Your story was very similar to my story, A Worn Path. Both stories heavily used imagery and showed that the author intended to value the individual. Individualism was a big part of Modernism, so I can easily see why both of our stories used this method of portraying Modernism. Our stories were also similar in the aspect of the time period they were written in. Similar to mine, your story was also written in the time period of the Great Depression. It jumped out at me that the character strayed away from society because all of the stories I have read about so far have said the exact same thing.

  9. My story as well uses a lot of imagery with things like rivers. In my opinion, imagery helps the story a lot and is much more entertaining to read.

  10. Your poem was very descriptive and used a lot of imagery in it to describe the group of men. My poem was very general when describing the people of the town such as the man and the woman that fell in love. Something that I thought did seem similar was that the poems both talked about random things. My poem was about a random little town and yours was about a group of men sitting in the outdoors. My poem uses things as nature such as the moon and the stars to describe how no matter what happens in the town, the moon and the stars will still come out at night. I feel that your poem was interesting and curiosity got the best of me to wonder where it was going.

  11. My story, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro", is similar to "Breakfast" because they both depict the way humans really act when they are desperate. When you talked about the story depicting people's true character, that stuck out to me.
