Time Period comparisons to then and now

The way people in the era of The Catcher in the Rye lived is very interesting and intriguing to me. The kids are basically able to do whatever they feel like doing. Holden just decided to leave his school and as far as we know, no one said anything or called his parents or anything. Now a day, if a kid was expelled from school then the parents would be the first person they call. But the modern school system is way to involved with the parents and bothersome to them more than anything. My parents do not care if my phone was taken away or I shot a piece of paper into the wastebasket instead of walking it over. There is a reason why people in Holden's time were more self dependent. Texting teaches us no communication skills. People want to be able to hide behind there phones instead of talking about a problem with the person directly to their face. I am no different and I know that I need to change my habits. Kids were able to smoke and drink back then without much consequence because no one cared(Salinger,185). If you really think about it teachers must hear what goes on during high schoolers' weekends. People try to be sneaky and discreet about it out of fear of being caught. I think that parents back then trusted their children more because they knew that they had risen them to act a certain way, but today so many parents do not care what their kids do and do not receive punishment for misbehaving. The kids think that they can do whatever they want to and this is not the case. The two time periods are so different and some would say that our period is better because of all the advancements in technology but the human nature has severely changed since then and I think I could leave Facebook and my cell phone to be a better person and live in a better world.
