The Grapes of Wrath is a very depressing book. I think that is a good book but not the kind of story that I am into. I would give it a three out of five. I hate books that make me feel sad because the people in the story are struggling to just survive. We have so much and I think that most people take it for granted and this really makes me sad. I think that the worst part of this book, for me, was when the family is at the gas station begging for gas and they watch their dog get hit by a car (Steinbeck, Chapter 13). Number thirteen is an unlucky number and I find it interesting that the dog is killed in this chapter. I do not like to hear about animals being harmed because I have a dog. The story of this book is good though. A struggling family is able to dig itself out of the hole of poverty and I feel good for them when they find the barn in the rain because I know that they will be safe for another night. I also liked when Rose of Sharon cared for the hungry man with a gift that she was not able to use on her own child because it died. I found that part very sad too. A dead baby is not ever a happy subject and especially since she had done everything to protect him from what was going on around her. It was a good book even though it was very depressing but I am happy with the rating I gave it.
